National Sandwich Day - Freebies in the News

My childhood memories having to do with sandwiches take me to the late 1940's into the early 1950's and my Mom buying Silvercup Bread the original sponsor of The Lone Ranger radio and television series among others linked to space adventures in that timeline.

Each school day she would prepare a sandwich on white bread to take to my elementary school - sometimes cutting off the crust which I never liked. I also remember her cutting the sandwich into quarters then placing it into one of those wax bags which would one day give way to Zip Bags. She might include a piece of fruit then place it into my 1950's metal lunch box though I don't recall what they looked like. I just remember it was metal with a snap lid and different pictures each year. It would have looked something like this ...

That little girl went on to have a space adventure of her own at age 11 in 1954 in the Nevada desert. Her love of bread was never really there - preferring protein and vegetables.

Today sandwiches consist of different types of breads with a wide variety of fillings - both healthy and unhealthy as some people are allergic to gluten. Takeout places often allow customers to choose from - a variety of bread or rolls, fillings, and any number of Condiments to establish a yummy flavor.

I am not a bread person and rarely eat sandwiches or anything made of grains. Exceptions include the rare cheeseburger or hot homemade Italian bread featured everywhere in my neighborhood. I prefer proteins and vegetables - meals that I prepare for myself.

If you're having a sandwich today at any meal ... enjoy.
