Houseplant Appreciation Day
I've lived on the top floor of an apartment building in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn since 9/1/91 - where the walls are mostly windows and sliding glass doors - complimented by three skylights that flood the space with sunlight each day. It is truly the perfect environment for growing plants and sharing their presence with spirits who visit during my psychic readings and workshops - as floral fragrances sometimes waft gently through the room. I've had plants of all shapes and sizes - not only adding to the ambience, but making the space special as noted by those who have visited here from all walks of life over the past 35 years. Here are just a few examples.

Houseplants offer a wide range of benefits that support both physical health and emotional well-being. One of their most noticeable advantages is their ability to improve indoor air quality by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen, which helps create a fresher living environment. Many plants also contribute to maintaining balanced humidity levels by releasing moisture into the air, which can reduce dry skin, irritated sinuses, and other discomforts caused by dry indoor conditions, especially during colder months. When grouped together, plants can even help regulate indoor temperatures slightly by cooling the air through natural transpiration.
Aesthetically, they bring warmth, texture, and vitality into a space. They soften interiors, add natural color, and enhance overall decor without overwhelming a room. Plant choices often reflect personal style and creativity, allowing individuals to express themselves through their living spaces. Homes and workplaces that include plants tend to feel more welcoming and inviting, creating an atmosphere that encourages comfort, connection, and calm.
Beyond their physical benefits, house plants have a powerful impact on mental and emotional health. The presence of greenery has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety, creating a calming atmosphere that encourages relaxation. Being surrounded by plants can elevate mood, promote a sense of well-being, and help people feel more grounded. In work or creative spaces, plants are often associated with improved focus, increased productivity, and enhanced creativity, making them a simple yet effective addition to home offices or studios.
Houseplants also enrich daily life by strengthening our connection to nature, particularly for those living in urban environments where access to green spaces may be limited. Caring for plants introduces a gentle routine that encourages mindfulness, patience, and a sense of responsibility. This regular interaction with living things can be deeply grounding and rewarding. In bedrooms, certain plants can even support a more restful environment by releasing oxygen at night, contributing to better sleep quality.
