There is an international group of women, age 50 and up, who meet monthly and wear purple dresses and red hats.
They just want to have fun and friendship ....
To that end they created a group called The Red Hat Society.
I had never heard of the Red Hat Society until my friend Connie mentioned it in the fall of 2003.
Yesterday a client named Geri mentioned The Red Hat Society and sent this email.
You asked about our local Red Hat Society. Here in a small town in West Central Idaho we have over 75 members (quite a feat in itself). We gather once a month for dessert at a local restaurant or meeting place. We wear our red hats and purple dresses and add boas, pins, etc. for an elegant or outrageous look depending on our moods of the day. I've been known to wear a red tiara and huge purple hoop earrings. We read funny, female oriented poetry and sometimes have entertainment or skits. It's an opportunity for women to gather together and just be frivolous (something we all need to do in a very serious world). Many of the red hats are home made and the creativity of the women knows no bounds. We all look beautiful and are truly a sight to see walking down Main Street in our regalia. I'll never forget the looks I got strutting down the aisles of the local grocery store with my shopping cart after our first meeting. Most of the men thought I'd lost my mind. Great, light hearted fun. For me it's reminiscent of the ancient sisterhood societies. Now I just need to add a magic wand to my trousseau.
The Red Hat Society began as a result of a few women deciding to greet middle age with verve, humor and Žlan. They believe silliness is the comedy relief of life, and since they are all in it together, they might as well join red-gloved hands and go for the gusto together. Underneath the frivolity, they share a bond of affection, forged by common life experiences and a genuine enthusiasm for wherever life takes us next. Continued
