On Hanukkah 2025, Hollywood mourns legendary film director, producer, screenwriter, actor, and political activist Rob Reiner and his wife, producer Michele Singer Reiner who were murdered by their son Nick. Rob, like his father Carl Reiner, was a Hollywood legend. Rob, like his father Carl Reiner, was a Hollywood legend.
Robert Norman Reiner (March 6, 1947 - December 14, 2025) was an American film director, producer, screenwriter, actor, and political activist. He came to prominence as Mike "Meathead" Stivic on the CBS sitcom "All in the Family" (1971-1979), a performance that earned him two Primetime Emmy Awards. Reiner was born into a Jewish family in the Bronx, New York City. Read more ...
Rob Reiner was my age, also from NYC - his mannerisms often a reminder of my Jewish heritage - combined with friends and relatives who were part of my early childhood and neighborhood. It's a kinship we can only share with people shaped by the same era, culture, and society.
The last time I saw Rob Reiner, he appeared on Bill Maher's Club Random podcast and "Real Time with Bill Maher" in September 2025.

Nick Reiner, 32, is the middle child of Rob and Michele Reiner. He has a history of mental illness and substance abuse.
He is being held without bail in the violent stabbing death of his parents. Nick has openly discussed his struggles with drugs and early rehab and his life on the streets, revealing a challenging path from adolescence into adulthood.
Though Rob and Michele sought help for their son - there were problems finding the right cocktail of drugs (medications) to help him at this point after going to rehab 17 times.
Take a look in Nick's eyes. They are vacant - a common theme with the severely mentally ill and always with mass killers.
The answer is schizophrenia (genetic programming) or drug induced psychosis - which pretty much follows the same pattern. Schizophrenia usually shows itself around ages 18-20 and is a very tragic journey for the person and their family - one which often results in suicide.
When I read clients who have schizophrenic relatives - they are always placed in a group home which is where Nick should have been living.
You have to assume that Rob and Michele's other son and daughters had suggested he be placed in some sort of group home or hospital or the like to be properly cared for.
Trump, 79, from Queens, NY was also born into NYC culture in that timeline - many of current his mannerisms and perceptions taking me back to the way things were growing up.
Rob Reiner had been outspoken about Trump. Due to his own mental illness and lack of impulse control - Trump made harsh comments about Reiner's murder which sparked rare Republican pushback as well as from people around the world.
Trump wrote in a social media post on Monday morning that Reiner's death was "reportedly due to the anger he caused by others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction ... known as Trump Derangement Syndrome" - a perfect description of Trump's narcissistic and sociopathic behavior.
We do indeed live in a crazy world filled with tortured souls.
