Bill Maher and Donald Trump - A Complicated Frenemyship

October 17, 2026

I've been a fan of Bill Maher for many years and always enjoy his monologues. I stopped listening to Trump's BS - changing the channel when he speaks or on shows I watch that run clips of his remarks - his rhetoric and lies having become an insult to the intelligence of most Americans.

Trump and Maher seem to have generated a unique meaning to the word 'friendship'. Bill has many friends, but I'm not sure that Trump understands the meaning of the word unless you're talking about the people who worship him.

Trump and Maher have a long history of trading harsh public insults, yet they continue to meet privately. Bill Maher did not have a new episode of Real Time with Bill Maher last night. The show took the week off. Instead of taping his show in Los Angeles, Maher spent Thursday night at the White House. He attended an epic dinner hosted by Trump, alongside musician Kid Rock and sports commentator Stephen A. Smith. According to Kid Rock, the four men discussed various political and social topics, including their mutual opposition to socialism and communism.

Over the years Trump has frequently attacked Maher on social media and in public statements, calling him a "Jerk," a "Moron," a "highly overrated Lightweight," and claiming Maher suffered from "Trump Derangement Syndrome". In return, Maher has heavily criticized Trump on his HBO show, once describing him as "everything wrong with a human being stuffed into one man".

In March 2025, musician Kid Rock helped arrange a dinner between the two at the White House. Afterward, Maher described Trump as surprisingly "gracious and measured" in private, while Trump later grew furious after Maher resumed mocking him on television - writing on Truth Social that having Maher over was a "total waste of time".

Despite the public blowups and insults, Trump reached back out to Maher this week. Following the latest dinner, Trump reversed course in comments to reporters, stating, "Bill Maher - I will tell you what. He likes me a lot more than people understand, and I actually like him. It was a good dinner."

This is what I call a bipolar off-again on-again relationship. Bipolar people - in this case Donald Trump - need this type of drama-filled relationship. By the time Bill returns to his show next Friday the pattern will repeat itself once again.
