Happy Birthday to the Capricorn Readers

Winter Solstice

Why the Winter Solstice Arrives Thursday   Live Science - December 21, 2011
Winter officially arrives late Wednesday or in the wee hours of Thursday, depending on the time zone you are in.

If you live in the northern hemisphere, the number of daylight hours is the shortest now. For me it's about more sleep time. I generally sleep 9 hours straight through. How does less hours of daylight affect you? I hope you don't suffer from seasonal affective disorder - a mood disorder in which people who have normal mental health throughout most of the year experience depressive symptoms in the winter or summer, spring or autumn year after year. In the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV), SAD is not a unique mood disorder, but is "a specifier of major depression".

Stonehenge

During a winter or summer solstice we watch the sun through windows set in place long ago by giant megalithic stone monuments built as Astronomical Observatories. I use the arches of the Verrazano Bridge just outside my home as a guide. This picture is weird to me as the street scene below the bridge looks like sepia and something dating back to the 1940's.
