Sacred Feminine

The concept of the Sacred Feminine is rooted in the idea that all life flows through those bodies in nature that are feminine. Life is viewed as sacred, holy.

Thus the place from which all life emanates, the metaphorical sacred, life-giving power of the feminine, is revered. It is important to note, however, that though these ideas are expressed in physical metaphors, physicality is not the goal.

For many people who embrace the Sacred Feminine there is a need to shed light on the role and reality of what bringing reverence for a holy view of feminine power can do not only for individual women, but also for society as a whole.

From this perspective, framing one's worldview from a reverence for the Sacred Feminine has the power to change how we interact with the world. For those who embrace this view, the world is a creative place, where life thrives.

The Earth, as the home of that life is seen as a sacred place, not one that human beings are called upon to subdue or conquer. For those who believe in the Sacred Feminine the Earth is a place to protect, and embrace.

Philosophically, following the path of the Sacred Feminine calls on followers to embrace somewhat essentialist views of spiritual femininity. Cooperation is valued over confrontation, nurturing over domination, peace over war, creativity over destruction.

And while these concepts are reductionist and essentialist, followers believe that these concepts must be brought into balance with the predominant patriarchal power structure in contemporary culture.

The sacred feminine refers to the "feminine power" seen as holy in certain religious traditions, especially Gnosticism and Neopaganism. This tradition venerates female beauty and the power of sexual reproduction.

This belief assumes that women, through the ability to bear children, are closer to the sacred than men. Through the sacred feminine, men can experience the "spiritual" act of sexual intercourse.

As in the concept of yin and yang from ancient Chinese philosophy, men and women are seen as representing complementary attributes, working together in a symbiotic circle; one cannot live without the other. This relationship is sacred.

A woman and a man are seen as completing one another to become one, and together they can create the "miracle" of new life.
