Coronavirus: Toilet Paper Challenges

In 25 years of writing blogs for Ellie's World - I've mentioned toilet paper three times. The first blog was in 2015 when the question was ... Does the paper roll over or under - above or below - giving new meaning to that expression. To me there is just one choice - over. Why would anyone want to reach under to grab a piece of paper? As it turned out I was right.

Let's segue to March 2020 and my second blog about coronavirus when the hoarding of toilet paper became a Hallmark of the coronavirus pandemic in the US. Shoppers flocked to local stores and online websites buying up as much toilet paper as allowed. Luckily I always keep a large abundance of paper supplies at home so I never worried about it - but I understand the needs of others. It would just be a matter of time before toilet paper would be back on the shelves by any distributor. My favorite is Charmin.

Sunday April 19

Needing necessities, I drove to one of the two local supermarkets getting a spot in front as the smaller store has no parking lot (remember this is Brooklyn). Once inside I picked up a few things then got on line to check out. The line wasn't long - the people friendly - most wearing masks and gloves while trying to social distance. As I reached the cashier I noticed lots of toilet paper near the entrance which I must've missed on my way in because it was not on my radar or shopping list. I really didn't need toilet paper but couldn't resist this cute little package costing $.99 plus tax (8.875%). Each roll is about 1/4 of the size of Charmin, but they could come in handy one day or maybe just become a souvenir from the great toilet paper pandemic.

Back on the Shelves

Wednesday April 22

I told you Charmin would be back on the shelves I just didn't think it would be this soon. Little by little everything is returning as is probably true in your area. This morning Z told me to go to Foodtown asap, as off I went. They had just stocked the shelves with Charmin and Bounty as I got there - good timing. By the time I checked out everything was gone.

I missed Cuomo's daily briefing when I was out, but it's beginning to feel like things are very slowly lifting. About opening businesses before the contagion is under control makes no sense, is reckless and irresponsible. I know people need to work and need money, but setting in motion a second wave of COVID-19 is wrong. As with so many things there are no easy solutions.
