Coronavirus: Ellie and Dean: Signs of the Times

2019-20 Coronavirus Pandemic

Saturday April 4, 2020

This photo was sent by my friend Dean who lives in Manhattan: "This is from my walk along the water Saturday. Not too crowded. I'd say 30% of people wearing masks."

Back here in Brooklyn ....

After fighting the feeling to stay home alone for yet another day I finally gave in and drove over to 3rd Avenue in the afternoon. It was the lure of springtime that called after days of rain - symbols of renewal everywhere as I drove past budding trees and flowers that line local streets.

Through my car window I observed about half of the people wearing masks and gloves before deciding it was safe to venture out shopping for necessities not available during senior hours 7-8am. I would assume the people without PPE have no where to buy it.

The people seemed unfazed by coronavirus as they went about their business while trying to maintain social distancing which is nearly impossible on a Saturday afternoon in the supermarket and on the street. One just has to overcome the anxiety that the people they pass along the way are contagious as shades of Governor Cuomo echo in their minds..

Social distancing can only go so far if you live in a city but one can try. The best thing you can do is stay home or go to an open area where there are few people.

While waiting on the checkout line I ran into my friend Jane who, with a knowing expression said, "Things are getting closer. It's what we've been talking about for years."

The line moved quickly as I approached a young cashier wearing a mask and gloves hidden behind a glass partition.

Loading packages in the hatch of my SUV - a white pigeon landed beside me. Could this be the same white pigeon I named Tesla who showed up everywhere I went last year? As we had such a warm winter he must've survived. Was he there as a sign?

I've connected with living and deceased animals in the past but suddenly Tesla sent a message - he was Tesla and he was hungry. OK. In the city they feed birds bread, but I'm not a bread eater. Remembering I had bought a package of flatbreads to nibble on - I took my right hand out of its protective glove - opened the package and threw a few very crumbled pieces to the ground as my fine feathered friend walked over and nibbled away. Whoops here come his friends time to go.

Somewhere along 3rd Avenue I found a parking spot and though it was risky business decided to park and just walk amongst humans even at a distance. That didn't last long as I jumped back in the car and headed back to the safety of home.

I like walking with others, or to go from place to place, but just walking for the sake of walking is extremely boring to me even if wearing earbuds. You never realize how much you miss a simple walk in the fresh air with others until it becomes a luxury.

As I sit here typing who should show up on my terrace railing? You got it. Tesla. If he keeps returning I'll take another picture. I hope he's practicing social distancing.
