Music plays as the soundtrack to our lives and experiences here - there is nothing without it.
I'm not one to stay up late and watch award shows, especially as they tend to repeat one another ... and can be seen in summary the following day on the news or a magazine show ... or fast forwarding on my DVR. But Sunday night's Grammy Awards were like a breath of fresh air in a world polluted with negativity on so many fronts.
For the viewers it was as much about the entertainment as finding out the winners. It allowed one to see the endless number of talented musicians and singers competing for recognition in the world today. Everyone wants to go creative but Sunday night really brought out the best of the best.
These days, visuals, media saturation and listener interaction are as crucial as the music itself.
The performances, costumes, makeup, tributes, Stephen Colbert using taking an iPad out of his jacket pocket to read the list of nominees, the 3D special effects during a tribute to Michael Jackson (glad I saved my 3D glasses) featuring Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson, Celine Dion, Smokey Robinson and Usher, followed by a tribute from Prince and Paris ... and on and on for 3 1/2 hours. I never thought I'd Tweet during a show, but I did last night.
Beyonce's six awards set a record for most Grammy Awards won by a female artist in a single night but Taylor Swift (20) took home the evening's biggest prize, Album of the Year.
Watching Taylor perform with Stevie Nicks (Fleetwood Mac)
took me back to my generation as music can move you through time and space.
The music was not just the usual 3 minute songs you hear on award shows. Many performances included several celebrities as if everyone was there to have fun.
I was surprised that I was familiar with all of the nominees - perhaps its because I love most music and follow it more these days than in past years. I think I enjoyed Jamie Foxx and company the best. I'm listening to him now as I blog - makes you want to get up and dance. He had the audience up and dancing.
The list of entertainers goes on and on. They'll be talking about this show for some time to come and featuring highlights on YouTube.
