Therapists go by many names and descriptions - psychiatrists, psychologists, therapists, counselors, life coaches - well according to degree. There is no rule for how long one should stay with the same therapist but after many years, when things become codependent and progress does not seem to be made, it is often time to try somebody new and perhaps with a different slant.
There is nothing wrong with consulting with two people at the same time if growth is made and the healing process moves forward. It is after all about healing in a world where most people are emotionally challenged either through genetics or due to circumstances in their personal lives.
As with therapist, when it comes to professional psychics one should not become codependent but use the tools they provide to move forward and hope that programmed issues are overcome.
